The library wears two hats – first as the hospital library catering to physicians who admit patients, and second as a regional medical library – providing medical information to health professionals in the region. The library occupies a physical space within the hospital, provides on-site librarian assistance, has a collection of books and DVDs for check out, and provides a computer lab for teaching and individual searching of the literature. The library also has a very strong virtual presence with its AHEC Digital Library consisting of the Dynamed Point-of-care tool, eJournals, eBooks, the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, MEDLINE and much more.
In an effort to put the library in the health professional’s environment – the AHEC Digital Library was placed inside of New Hanover Regional Medical Center’s EHR – EPIC. In 2014 an “Ask A Librarian” button was also put into EPIC so that physicians can very easily ask the librarians to research topics. This “Ask a Librarian” button links directly to the library’s email.
The library also has a robust Friends of the Library program, as well as two sister libraries in Eastern Europe.
