The short thumb spica brace controls motion at the first metacarpal-phalangeal (MCP) joint. It encloses the base of the thumb from the first inter-phalangeal joint to the radio-carpal articulation of the wrist. It is sometimes called a palm-based thumb spica. It is used to stabilize injuries to the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) commonly known as skier's thumb, fractures or avulsion injuries to the proximal first phalanx or distal first metacarpal, severe sprains of the thumb, or for arthritic conditions involving the MCP joint.
