The long thumb spica brace provides primary stabilization for the first metacarpal-phalangeal (MCP) joint and the first carpo-metacarpal (CMC) joint, as well as secondary support for the radio-carpal and the radio-ulnar wrist joint. It provides stability for all the injuries mentioned above, for which the short thumb spica may be used, as well as injuries to the base of the thumb at the CMC joint, such as Bennet's or Rolando's fractures, or to stabilize a painful CMC joint from arthritis. The long thumb spica brace is also useful for suspected or confirmed navicular (scaphoid) fractures, and for injuries or arthritis involving the trapezium or trapezoid bones of the wrist.
