The X-BOLT™ is an expandable bolt for secure fixation & rotational stability in osteoporotic bone - replacement for the lag screw for DHS plating or IM hip nailing in hip/trochanteric fractures. The X-BOLT™ is comprised of an inner shaft with threads of reversing directions, an outer sleeve with expandable section and a cap to give a smooth superior interface. The X-BOLT's four expandable arms allow for easy visualisation on AP and lateral x-rays. Rotation of the inner bolt compresses, deforms and expands the outer sleeve; the torque being resisted by the keyed plate barrel, or the set screw of the trochanteric nail. Clinical trials are planned in 2010 for the X-BOLT™ with Dynamic Plating System. The X-BOLT™ Hip Nail will have a proximal diameter of just 14mm.
